Q&A: Forgiveness of Sins after Repenting

Question: Does God forgive repeated sins after repenting?

With this question we first need to define sin and repentance.

What is Sin?

“Whosoever commits sin transgresses also the Law: for sin is the transgression of the Law.”

1 John 3:4

“Therefore by the works of the law there shall no flesh be justified in His sight: for by the Law is the knowledge of sin.”

Rom 3:20

In 1 John, transgression literally means to miss the mark as an arrow shot at a target. In this analogy there is only one bulls eye with an infinite number of possible misses. Only one right and everything else is wrong. In Romans we find that no flesh will be justified by the Law. The word flesh here is literally fleshly mindset, so we get knowledge of what sin is by approaching the Law with a spiritual mindset. Sin is therefore, missing the spiritual meaning of the Law or applying the Word of God to the Flesh. Jesus said, “I have not come to destroy the Law or the Prophets”, and “The Words that I speak are Spirit and Life.” (Mat 5:17, John 6:63)

What is repentance?

Jesus said, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent and believe (understand) the gospel (message).”

Mark 1:15

Repent literally means to change the way you think or reconsider a thing. This is in the sense of turning to go another way. Remember Lot’s wife. She turned back from her escape and became a pillar of salt having the water of life removed. (Gen 19:26)

Does God forgive repeated sins after repenting?

“For if we sin willfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remains no more sacrifice (offering) for sins,”

Heb 10:26 cf. Deu 23:18

“For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning. For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after they have known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them. It is happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog is turned to his own vomit again; and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire.” (Prov 26:10-11)

2 Peter 2:20-22

“And Jesus said unto him, No one, having put their hand to the plow, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.

Luke 9:62

Therefore, based on these three witnesses the short answer to the question is: No, God will not forgive repeated sins. However, the key is “after receiving the knowledge of the truth.” If you haven’t received the knowledge of the truth you can’t repent and change the way you think because you don’t know the truth.

What is knowledge of the truth?

“Then Jesus said to those Judeans which believed on him, If you continue in my Word, then are you my disciples indeed; And you shall know (have knowledge of) the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”

John 8:31-32

“It is the spirit that gives life; the flesh benefits nothing: the Words that I speak to you, they are Spirit, and they are Life.”

John 6:63

“But the hour comes, and now is, when the true worshipers shall worship the Father in Spirit and in Truth: for the Father seeks such to worship Him. God is a Spirit: and they that worship Him must worship Him in Spirit and in Truth.”

John 4:23-24

The knowledge of the Truth comes to us in the Words of Jesus. Understanding the Words of Jesus in the Spirit makes you alive. Understanding the Words of Jesus in the Flesh has no benefit. The only way to worship God is in the Spiritual understanding of the Word which is the Truth. This truth will set you free from the burdens of guilt placed upon you by the fleshly interpreters of the Word. If you come to know the spiritual truth and return to the flesh you will receive no forgiveness… ever.
