Q&A: The Greatest Commandment

Which is the greatest Commandment in the Law?

“One who was a lawyer came, testing Jesus, asking, “Teacher, which is the greatest Commandment in the Law?

“You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest Commandment. And the second is like unto it, ‘You shall love your neighbor/brother as yourself.”

Jesus – Matthew 22:36-40

Who Keeps the Commandments

“He that has my commandments and keeps them, it is he that loves me: and he that loves me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.

Judas said to him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that you will manifest yourself unto us, and not unto the world? Jesus answered and said to him, ‘If a man loves me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. He that does not love me does not keep my sayings: and the Word which you hear is not mine, but the Father’s which sent me. These things I have spoken to you, being yet present with you. But the Comforter, which is the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said to you.”

Jesus – John 14:20-26

No Cloak for Sin

“If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have had sin: but now they have no cloak for their sin. He that hates me hates my Father also. If I had not done among them the works which no other man has ever done, they would not have had sin: but now they have both seen and hated both me and my Father. But this comes to pass, that the word might be fulfilled that is written in their Law, ‘They hated me without a cause…’”

Jesus – John 15:20-27

Signs of End

“As he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately saying, ‘Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of your coming, and of the end/completion of the world/age?’

Jesus answered and said to them, ‘Take heed that no man deceives you. For many shall come in my name saying I am Christ; and shall deceive many. And you shall hear of wars and rumors of wars: see that you are not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.

For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places. All these are the beginning of sorrows.”

Jesus – Matthew 24:3-8

End Time Prophesy

“It shall come to pass in the last days, that the Mountain of the LORD’s house shall be established in the top of the mountain and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it. Many people shall come and say, ‘Come ye, and let us go up to the Mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob; and He will teach us of His ways, and we will walk in His paths: for out of Zion shall go forth the Law and the Word of the LORD from (New) Jerusalem.’

He shall judge among the nations and shall correct many people: and they shall beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning-hooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war anymore.”

Isaiah 2:2-4; Micah 4:1-5

Commandment for Life Everlasting

“He that believes/trusts in me, does not believe/trust in me, but in Him that sent me. And he that sees me sees Him that sent me. I am come a Light into the world, that whosoever believes/trusts in me should not abide in darkness. And if any man hears my words and does not believe, I do not judge him: for I have not come to judge the world, but to save the world.

He that rejects me and does not receive my words, has one that judges him: the Word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day. For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, He gave me a Commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak. And I know that His Commandment is life everlasting: whatsoever I speak therefore, even as the Father said to me, so I speak.”

Jesus – John 12:44-50

Keep the Commandments

“Now these are the Commandments, the statutes, and the judgments, which the LORD your God commanded to teach you, that you might do them in the land where you go to possess it: That you might reverence the LORD your God, to keep all His statutes and His Commandments, which I command you…

Hear therefore, O Israel, and observe to do it; that it may be well with you, and that you may increase mightily, as the LORD God of your fathers has promised you in the land that flows with milk and honey. Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD. You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your might. And these words, which I command you this day, shall be in your heart…”

Moses – Deuteronomy 6:1-8

Love your Neighbor

“You shall not hate your brother in your heart… You shall not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the LORD.”

Moses – Leviticus 19:16-18

“Behold, one came and said to him, ‘Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life?’

He said to him, ‘Why do you call me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if you will enter into life, keep the Commandments.’

He said to him, ‘Which?’ Jesus said, ‘You shall do no murder, You shall not commit adultery, You shall not steal/take by fraud, You shall not bear false witness, Honor your father and your mother: and, You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ The young man said to him, ‘All these things have I kept from my youth up: what do I yet lack?’

Jesus said to him, ‘If you will be perfect/complete, go and sell that you have, and give to the poor, and you shall have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me.

But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful: for he had great possessions. Then Jesus said to his disciples, ‘Truly I say unto you, That a rich man shall hardly enter into the kingdom of heaven. And again I say unto you, It is easier for a rope to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.’”

Jesus – Matthew 19:16-24

Choose Whom you shall serve

No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon/wealth.”

Jesus – Matthew 6:24

The Sheep and the Goats

“When the Son of Adam shall come in his glory and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory: And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divides his sheep from the goats: And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left. Then shall the King say to them on his right hand, ‘Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: For I was an hungered and you gave me food: I was thirsty, and you gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: Naked, and you clothed me: I was sick, and you visited me: I was in prison, and you came unto me.’

Then shall the Righteous answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you an hungered, and fed you? or thirsty, and gave you drink? When did we see you a stranger, and took you in? or naked, and clothed you? Or when did we see you sick, or in prison, and came unto you? The King shall say to them, ‘Truly I say unto you, Inasmuch as you have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.

He shall say also to them on the left hand, ‘Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels; For I was an hungered and you gave me no food: I was thirsty, and you gave me no drink: I was a stranger, and you did not take me in: naked, and you did not clothe me: sick, and in prison, and you did not visit me. They shall also answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you an hungered, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto you?’ Then he shall answer them, saying, ‘Truly I say unto you, Inasmuch as you did it not to one of the least of these, you did it not to me.

And these shall go away into everlasting punishment but the Righteous into life eternal.”

Jesus – Matthew 25:31-46

The Greatest Commandments

“You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest Commandment. The second is like unto it, ‘You shall love your neighbor/brother as yourself.”

On these two Commandments hang all the Law and the prophets.”

Jesus – Matthew 22:36-40

The Law is Spiritual

For we know that the Law is spiritual…”

“There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For the Law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death. For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:
That the righteousness of the Law might be fulfilled in us, who do not walk after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally/fleshly minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the Law of God, neither indeed can be. So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.
But you are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if any man does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.”

Paul – Romans 7:14, 8:1-9
